This Little owl, perched on a disused cement silo in a Wight Building Materials quarry, was snapped by our sharp-eyed Operations Manager, Steve Burton. The photo won first prize in the Institute of Quarrying’s competition for its 2016 calendar. “There was no zoom lens. I just used the point-and-shoot camera we use for our activities here at St Georges Down quarry,” he says. Unperturbed, the Little owl (Athene noctua) let Steve get quite close. He adds: “They’re not uncommon in this part of the world” – Newport, Isle of Wight – though hunting owls tend to watch a different type of quarry.
